Sam Wreford

Sam began running at the age of 10 following encouragement from his school teacher at the time. It was this teacher who Sam credits for instilling in him the principles of working hard and never giving up. These values have subsequently helped him in getting to where he is today. Barry Magee (Olympic bronze medallist – Marathon, 1960), who now coaches Sam, is the reason he started racing the marathon. Under Barry's expert guidance, Sam has achieved the following highlights to date (with plenty more to come!).

Sam is easily one of NZ’s greatest prospects for the marathon distance. He has previously won Invercargill, Christchurch (twice!), Rotorua and Auckland Marathons. He currently hold course records for Dunedin and the Legend marathons. Sports Lab continues to work alongside Sam and his coach Barry. Initially to help getting rid of long standing injuries however now the goal is to make sure Sam is able stay healthy, run efficiently and run fast! Our work with him has focused on a number of things, some of which include mobility, movement patterns and running gait. Sam is an exciting prospect for NZ distance running as well as a genuine nice guy, we love working alongside Sam and can’t wait to see him achieving even greater results in the future!

Occupation: Appliance Technician

Sport: Marathon running

Personal Bests:
  • Marathon - 2:16:28
  • Half Marathon - 1:05:57

Greatest Sporting Achievement: "I think my New Zealand Cross-country title in 2012 has to rate very highly as that is always a hard race to win and normally the field is very strong".

Sam is being very humble here, for those of you who do not know, the NZ Cross country championships is one of the most prestigious and fiercely contested races on the Athletics NZ calendar. This is a great achievement and one which was very well deserved.

Goals: Sam prefers to keep his cards close to his chest in this regard however we have heard whispers of a potential 2018 Commonwealth games target. The event is set to be hosted on the Gold Coast and would require a blistering time of 2:12 for the marathon to qualify!
